 "Does the job." 2010-01-24

Be sure to look at all the photos that have been posted.

Takes awesome day photos! I got a pic of a squirrel in mid hop. I don't seem to have a problem with animals moving too fast for the camera in the daytime.

I haven't had any issues with camera "weirding out" at dawn or dusk.

I have had it for about two months and kept it outdoors the majority of that time. Seems to handle the rain and cold alright. I had only one time where it weirded out. I checked it after a cold snap accompanied by a sleet storm. The new batteries had drained, so I replaced the batteries and let it warm up before setting it back up again. I haven't had a problem like that since. The battery life in my experience has been awesome, other than what I mentioned above.

The night photos are sometimes good and sometimes bad. If the animal is moving too fast there can be a blur. If the animal is too close (I'd say 1'-2' ) to the camera at night there is a possibility of animal/object being almost whited out. And more times than not even the best shots can have the eyes of the animal whited out almost glowing white, that doesn't bother me though. Just so you know, the night pics and video are black and white. Another side note in case it matters to someone is that the infrared "flash" glows red when activated.

Video at night, in my experience is not that great. You get 5 second clips and it is grainy, especially for shots at far distances.

Timing of the camera seems great to me. I run my hand across the sensor after I set it up, just to make sure it is working before I leave. I hear the click of the camera, in what seems, immediately. However there is a delay between shots after the first shot if you set it to 3 multi-shot mode. You do hear the "click" of the camera, but in my opinion it isn't loud at all.

The strap is a nylon adjustable one with a male/female clip. Hasn't broken on me, like some other reviews say. I do put some half hitches on it to make sure it stays secure and doesn't slide down the tree.

Access to the memory card is not great. Same as the other reviews. If you have man hands it is a little awkward and I have yet been able to remove it with gloves on.

The laser aimer works great at night. During the day it can be difficult to see. If aiming during the day i put my hand in front of the laser and walk backwards while facing the camera keeping the laser on my hand to see where the camera is pointing. Also there is not a way to hold the front cover open when you are using the laser aim. The laser can only be seen when the cover is open. So I use a stick to hold the cover up. Maybe Moultrie will put a kickstand on the cover for future models or let you laser aim with the cover down.

The motion sensor seems to have good range (distance and width).

This camera also has a handheld mode option. I haven't used it in that mode yet, but thought I'd mention it.

The view/angle of the camera lens seems to capture a lot. I have been pleased with it.

 "Great Deer Cam" 2010-01-07
By Stephen Richardson (north augusta, sc)
The Moultrie I-40 is my first deer camera. The megapixels is 4.0 which doesn't sound like much these days but the pictures come out great. It is easy to use and set up. It takes 6 "D" batteries which should last quite a while since there is not much demand for power when not taking pictures, but it is too early to tell. You can set the frequency of delay at one minute, five minutes, 20 minutes etc. I would like to have had it so that I could set a time instead of it being preset. Also there is a button on the front for using it to take pictures manually, something I don't expect to use. Bottom line, it takes great pictures of my deer that I would not be able to get otherwise.

 "good for price" 2010-01-07
By M. Tomaszewski (wisconsin)
for the price the camera works well. batteries last longer than i expected. takes thousands of pictures before batteries die. another plus is the ability to hold a four gig sd card. as others have mentioned, the slow shutter speed does give you blur if the game is moving.

ive had one big problem with the camera. after a year the color pictures during the day are all now black and white. this past season ive had thousands of pics but only a couple dozen have been in color.

even with the draw backs i still would recommend the product. i just purchased two for my friends. good price for a good camera.

 "Good camera" 2010-01-07
By LUVSNOW (Up North in MI)
We really enjoy the moon phasing on this camera. However, after being out in the woods for several months...the lcd display doesn't work all that well. It only shows about half of the screen now. The photos still turn out good...you just have to guess at the data shown on the little screen.

 "moultrie I-40 opinion" 2009-12-27
By William Fagnan (Alpine, N.Y.)
Takes good pictures and was reasonably easy to get familiar with. The SD card location is impossible to access if you have large fingers. I have to use a needle nose pliers to remove the card. Probably a tweezers would also work for that. The tree attachment setup is pretty chincy and the strap is too short for many trees. I use a small rope for attachment and in many cases place a wedge behind the camera for pointing it. Otherwise a great product at a reasonable price.
