 "Alpen Spotting Scope" 2010-04-19
By Keyser Soze (Skippack PA)
Great scope and service from the Alpen headquarters. The tripod supplied with the scope had a screw which had been cross threaded not allowing the scope to be mounted to the tripod. One call to Alpen and and a replacement was mailed immediately. Nice to have good timely service.

 "Amazing value" 2010-02-27
By P. Bergstrom (Severna Park, MD USA)
I had been looking for a decent affordable scope for birding for years (meaning under $1000, ideally under $500). With all the other ones in this price range that I had tried in stores, the image got very dark and the field of view very small when I zoomed in, making the zoom feature pretty useless. Then I read a good review of this scope on [...] (it was rated best of the mid-priced scopes they tested) and decided to give it a try. I was very pleasantly surprised at the image quality and brightness, and the eye relief (ability to see the whole field when using glasses) is good until you zoom in to about 40X (this is common in scopes). The image is still bright and sharp at 60X. Recently I was able to identify some ducks using 60X that were so far away I could barely see them with my naked eye, and while looking at some Canada geese that were about 900 feet away (across 3 sports fields, using 60X) I was able to see and identify a bluebird that was on the ground near them, with the blue back and reddish breast clearly visible. There is a slight bit of purple fringing on the edges of objects, especially at 60X, but it's not very noticeable. I have tried digiscoping once and it worked well, even under completely overcast skies.

 "Great Value" 2009-10-13
By Brad Buck (Seattle, WA. USA)
After researching several different brands this spotting scope from Alpen Optics is the best value I have found.

The optical quality is exceptional, fully multi-coated with long eye relief of 18-19mm. the large 80mm objective lens allows for clear bright viewing at dusk and dawn yet the size and weight are comfortable for the backpacking I do.

The Tripod includes fine adjustments for both windage and elevation.

Check the quality of other brands at this price and you'll see why Outdoor Life magazine gave this scope their Great Buy award.

"alpen 788 spotting scope kit" 2010-02-10
By R. Hardrick
This was my first experience with amazon as far as purchasing online. I found it to be a very pleasent experience. From the time I placed my order which was an Alpen 788 spotting scope kit until it arrived was less than ten days and shipping was free. The spotting scope kit was as advertised. I will be able to evaluate it futher when I take it to the range and see how it performs in vewing .223 bullet holes at two hundred yards. So far I would recomend the product to a friend.

"very good scope but skip the tripod" 2009-12-08

Alpen 20-60x80 w/45 degree EP, waterproof Spotting Scope

As a very keen shooter with a number of top quality scoped rifles, I was in need of a good spotting scope. After finding a brochure of the Alpen optics products I found that they were much better priced in the USA than here in Australia. After looking around I found what I wanted on the Amazon site and purchased the Kit "20-60 x 80" a shame that Amazon does not ship to places outside the States so I had to ask a friend in California to forward the item to Australia. Upon arriving the scope was actually better than I thought it would be, however, the stand in the kit was broken and not of a good quality. I wonder why this seems to be the case with other brands too, why do producers not increase the price somewhat and add a good quality tripod? Luckily a good friend has all the tools to fix it and the combo works a treat. Easy to use, very clear optics, and so it seems overall a very good scope. It stood outside in the rain while observing birds and did not miss a beat. Excellent VFM (value for money). I should recommend this item and brand to friends albeit with the note not to bother with the tripod kit but to purchase a good one in a camera store.

"Great Scope for the Money" 2009-09-25
By Glenn Olander-Quamme
Solid construction. Image is bright and resolution excellent at 20mm to roughly 40mm, falls off from that point on but is still decent at 60mm. Eye relief is good, but I wish the rotating eye cups had detents that would hold them in place at various extensions. I'm used to ring-type focusing mechanisms, such as those on DSLR camera lenses, so it took me a while to get used to using the Alpen's focusing knob. It isn't as fast as a focusing ring, but once I got accustomed to it, I found focusing to be easy and precise. Plus, unlike a ring focusing mechanism, it is easy to use with a soft support, such as a bean bag. This is a big scope, so you really need something solid on which to mount it. The table-top tripod that comes with the scope is usable in circumstances where you have a reasonably flat surface on which to place it, but if you're in the field you'll probably need a full-size tripod. (I haven't tried it on a monopod.) One nice feature is the rotating tripod ring, which allows you to rotate the body of the scope without changing the aiming point. Obviously, top end scopes from Swarovski and Leica will outperform this scope, particularly at the far end of the zoom range. But then, those scopes cost on the order of 7-8 times as much. This may be the best scope at its price point, and other reviewers have noted that it outperforms some "big name" scopes that cost 2-3 times as much.
