When you first take the Celestron UpClose binoculars out of the box, it is pretty clear they are not made by Carl Zeiss Optics. Then again, they cost around $30 not $1,100. The UpClose binoculars do pack some nice features, and perform fairly well though. The optical coatings used are fair at best, and you will see internal reflections under some conditions. On the plus side, they have a very nice, wide 430ft linear FOV, and 8.2degree angular FOV. At their low price, I can take these anywhere, and not worry about damaging or losing them. I give them 4 stars for budget binoculars. If you want better performance though, look elsewhere at more expensive models with better optical coatings.



Pros:

Very inexpensive.

Fairly compact size

Pretty well made for cheap binoculars

Good performance at "general use" such as bird watching and sporting events.

Wide-angle FOV (Field Of View)



Cons:

Cheap accessories. Useless lens caps.

Minimal optical coating

Not waterproof, but "weather resistant".

Astronomy use not good in poor light conditions.

I received these binoculars two days ago and have been putting them through the paces, indoors and outdoors. The temp. outside today was about 25 degrees fahrenheit, a partly cloudy winter day. I came across some Cedar waxwings and also a Downy woodpecker, the views through these Pentaxs' were great, I noticed the focus was very sharp and the Birds colors looked natural. During use I found that I could fairly easily track down the birds when looking through the binocs, and when they would fly from tree to tree I was able to keep track of them and re-focus when they landed. The view takes on a very detailed and three dimensional look through these, the depth of field is great and the Pentax PCF 8x42's lenses seemed to wrap around the birds and they just ' Pop' out at you, very impressive in my opinion. As to build quality, they are very sturdily built and comfortable to hold, these binoculars had a lot of thought put into them, from the focus lock switch, to the divets for your thumbs on the underside, to the sharp looking external coating, plus the all important fully multi-coated optics and Bak-4 prism, I am very satisfied with these Pcf 8x42's. Indoors in poor light, I could get a sense of the brightness of the binocs, and can say that these will perform well at daybreak or dusk, and I can also confirm that the minimum focus distance is what Pentax states(11.5ft). I do wear glasses and the eyecups are adjustable,smooth operating, and comfortable.If you are looking to get into birding, hunting, or nature watching, the price at which you can buy these makes them a great 'bang for the buck'. Pentax has been making camera lenses for about ninety years, they know what they are doing. Peace in 2010 and thereafter.

For the price these binoculars are ok, the wheel to adjust distances is stiff. I much prefer my Nikon 7 x 35 glasses of the same price (15 years ago!) that I lost-much sharper, crisper image.

These glasses are wonderful. They have excellent range, are very bright and have a wide field of view. They are small and compact. The eye rubber guards twist to retract and expand making the binocular even more compact and durable. The main finger focus in the center of the glasses is knobbed to give you easy control while focusing on objects and you can lock it to your set focus. The right eye focus turns and clicks into place so your right eye focus is always set to your individual need. It is an absolutely wonderful set of glasses and very durable.

Very light; I suspect there are some plastic lenses in there somewhere. Sharp (even for astronomical use which is demanding), relatively bright, very well collimated. If you are over 45 years old, there's no reason to get 50mm since your pupil will not open enough to take advantage of the bigger exit pupil that 50mm binocs provide. You're just carrying around extra weight & paying more. Liked them so much I gave a pair as a gift.

These are very good quality binoculars. For this price they would be hard to beat.

I now have these in 8x40 and a pair in 10x50 of this same type & use them for birding in my back yard & along the coast. I would rate these glasses equal to those costing 10 times the price.

My wife is absolutely thrilled with these. She uses them mainly for bird watching. 8 x 40 works nicely for viewing objects approximately 50 feet away. Not too powerfull although it also does a nice job with objects 100 yards away too. Construction seems strudy as well. Would definately recommend.

Don't order anything from this supplier. They do not care for their customers at all. I ordered a pair of binoculars two weeks before Christmas for my son. I kept checking on shipping and they told me that it was no problem receiving the item by Christmas. I contacted them several times asking for tracking info & they kept assuring me that the item would ship soon & I would receive tracking info. Three days before Christmas I receive an email telling me that they couldn't find the item in their warehouse and had been looking for a week. They cancelled my order without even offering to replace the item with a comparable pair. I was then left to scramble in town locally to try and find a replacement in time. When I placed this order it said that this item was in stock. The Amazon website still says it is in stock! I hate how Amazon has become so convoluted with their suppliers, you order from Amazon but they have no responsibility for the product..what's the point. You might as well order direct.

I sold my astronomy binoculars (too big to be useful, the telescope is easier) to buy my mom - a birding enthusiast - these for Mother's Day. When I got them I checked them out for myself. Great detail, good magnification and field of view, and easy to keep steady. After dark I looked at some open star clusters and found that they are great for astronomy too. Mom loves 'em, uses them almost every day from the kitchen window for urban bird-watching. I plan to buy a pair for myself for astronomy.
