This is a nice product. I bought one for under 300 and figured it was worth it. Its not amazing, but at night you can see around very well. Don't expect commando type quality (this is a generation one), but if you want to have some fun it will do the job. Its light but sturdy, very well built. Just for general information about the IR light, you can notice it, but only when its on and pointed right at your eyes. And then it looks just like a red dot. Not sure if you can still notice it at a distance or not but i know my cat saw it, so other wildlife might as well at closer distances. If you want it on and to see an animal too, i suggest pointing it slightly away so that you can still see the creature, so the light isn't as noticeably to them.

Had the chance to own this pair of binoculars and I tell you the optics from Olympus is just plain amazing. It is light weight and compact perfect for those needs or trips that you don't need to lug extra weight around. The optics are awesome. Great for bird-watching or walks in the forest. They are clear both in daylight and low-light. At the lowest magnification (8x), the images are sharp and crisp. At the highest (16x), the images degrade a little bit because of shakiness which is expected once magnification is extended to its maximum. The weight is just right for handling a binocular of this size and compensating image shake. I own another comparable-sized binoculars which is a Barska Gladiator 9-27x25 and the Olympus Tracker just beats the Barska in clarity (although I also gave the Barska a 5-star due to its rubberized body and overall quality make). Olympus is a quality maker of everything related to optics and you will not be disappointed with this Binocular. Great quality, great optics.

The optics on these binoculars seem to work fine but they lose 1 star each for the cheap zoom dial and the twist up/down eyecups. The plastic ring that operates the zoom feels cheap and fragile. The eyecups are a good idea that was executed poorly. Instead of being soft rubber eye cups that you can put up to your face they are made like plastic lens caps that have a 1/2 inch hole cut in them. They twist up and down to change the focal length by about 1/4 inch but there is nothing to keep you from accidently scratching your eyes with the rough edge of the hole cut in the cup.

This is my second pair of the Olympus Tracker 8X25 binoculars. I carry them with me on all my walks and the clarity and ease of use as well as the portability make them an exceptional value. The price is most reasonable too. I have a friend who spent over $1000 on her Zeiss (sp?) binoculars, and when she's let me borrow hers, I haven't noticed a significant difference. This eye interval adjustment mechanism of this brand new Olympus Tracker PCI 8x25 binocular broke after two days of usage during our recent trip in OCT 09. I sent this back for repair in late OCT 09 and I still have not received back a repaired unit or a replacement. I called twice in DEC 09 and Olympus told me that they could not send me a replacement because they do not have any replacement units in stock. How can Olympus runs a warranty service without stocking parts and replacement units? They also told me they are unsure when they can send me a replacement unit.

I had these for several years and they are very nice for travel. Very clear images in good light and hardly noticable around the neck or in a coat pocket. Used them more than bigger and better (8x42 or IS) binocs. But alas I dropped them from waist height and the hinge broke. So now it's a tough decision just to replace or pick up something with a hardier construction. Will try heartier this time.

I purchased these binoculars based on the posted reviews. Upon receiving and trying them out, the first impression is:



Pros:

compact, lightweight, pouch with belt loop, good short range ability



Cons:

Cheap look and feel, eye cup covers come off easily and will get lost sooner or later, neck strap is flimsy and on the short side, eye interval is rather narrow and if your eyes are wide apart like mine, you can't increase the inverval enough to accommodate both eyes at the same time

They have been a pleasant surprise. They are in fact light weight, provide good optics for the price and are nice and compact for carrying and storage.
