"Super telescope for the price." 2010-07-21
By M.— (Seattle, WA USA)
I replaced my older spotting scope with this Celestron Ultima 100 and I've found it to be an excellent all around telescope. The optics are sharp and the light gathering capabilities of the 100mm primary make it a fun scope for both wildlife and light backyard astronomy. Generally you get what you pay for in telescopes... but this is an excellent value for the money. The only caveat is that you will need a sturdy tripod as the scope is relatively heavy but once adjusted to the balance point (easily done) it handles just fine. One other thing... if you are 'height challenged' or plan on doing a bit more astronomical viewing then I would spring a little extra for the version with the angled eyepiece.

 "This baby is big..." 2010-03-08
By Fabio Passeto (Campinas, SP, Brazil)
I have purchased one of these and I got really very well impressed with the overall image quality.

I bought one but I end up returning and changing to a 52247 model. This spotting scope is somehow bigger than it appears in the picture. I had an idea of the size based on the ocular but this oculuar is bigger that the average.

But it is not heavy though and its size is comparable to a tripoid size. So this shouldn't be such problem in terms of portability in many cases.

The ocular can be unscrewed to prevent damages during transportation and it has an o-ring for waterproofing.

The lens shade is not extensible and it has an 80mm thread for filters.

"Celestron Ultima 80 mm 20x-60x ED Spotting Scope" 2009-08-06
By MT Nester (Tucson, AZ)
I've owned this scope for about a year now. Its an amazing piece of glass. I can clearly see people in their vehicles high up on the Mt Lemmon highway over 13 miles away (during the winter when there's not much air turbulence). Closer in, it's spectacular for viewing birds. From 20 yards away looking at a kestrel or a dove, it is like you are holding them in your hands inches from your face. Its startling. The image is extremely sharp, contrasty and clear with no visible color fringing or halos. At 100 yards, 1/4" holes in paper are easy to see. Every time I use it I smile. The build quality is good, not like a bank vault, but good. I wouldn't drop it, or be rough with it so how sturdy does it have to be? I haven't compared it with the non-ED version or the 60 or 100mm, but Celestron did their job well with this unit. I bought a 26" Stanley 'Professional' tool box which I spray painted white to keep cool and some 3" thick foam and built a really sturdy case. Your local drug store can supply you with a 2"x3" prescription bottle that fits perfectly as an eyepiece cap. The only other thing you will need is a sturdy tripod. Mine is an old Bogen 3020 that has been used for 4x5 and medium format cameras up to 15 pounds, and I still view with hands off. Its a great value for the money. Haven't tried it as a camera lens yet, but for viewing its amazing.

"Nice to take a look through it.. ONLY for that" 2009-05-16
By Antonio P. S. Forster (Campinas, SP, Brazil)
I've been looking for a scope for a while, trying to find what would be a good option, with good price x performance, and decided to give this one a try. I really regret of the choice I made.

Once I got it out of the box I noticed some kind of oil that seemed to go out between the body and the front plastic part. Ok.. since a frind of mine brought it for me, I thought that might be result of atmosphere variation due to the flight.

I've installed on the tripod and the first surprise is that, when in 60X, it is TOO WAY dark.. and I really mean it. Ok, so far, acceptable and I can handle it.

Then I installed the T-adapter and connected my Canon EOS on it to check how it performs with Camera. The T-adapter (Adorama T-Mount for Canon EOS) itself is very good, and the second surprise was to see that it gets WAY worse through the camera:

During daylight, clear sky, and light enough to take a f/4.0 lens in ISO 100 at 1/2500 or 1/3000, through the scope you must use 1/30 on ISO 200. At Celestron webpage they say the scope would be a f/6; it is no near that. I'm not making calculations, but I would suspect it is about f/15, at least.

The third surprise was to see the definition of images is awful. You cant, by no means, take a quality picture through it. You definitivelly cant focus to sharp pictures.

I cant recommend this, and I'll try to sell it to someone that dont have too much expectations for it, since I'm not in US to return it to Amazon.

I'm not sure if I'm too used with my Canon 70-200 F/4 L IS USM and my Canon 17-55 F/2.8 IS USM lenses (that I know are high-quality pieces), or if this scope is really bad, but I'll be looking for another brand; I wont try Celestron again.

 "Celestron 52251 Ultima 80ED Spotting Scope" 2007-10-19
By Ron Turney (Ontario, NY United States)
I bought the Ultima 80ED spotting scope for a trip to Yellowstone this fall. Both my wife and I are glad we had it along. It offered nice crisp views of grizzlies, pronghorn, and bald eagles. This is my first spotting scope so I don't have anything to compare it to but it seemed to perform very well for a medium priced scope. I paid about $400 for it. People that we let take a look though it were also impressed. In fact one comment was "we gotta get one of these". This is not my first Celestron product. I also have one of their 8" SC telescopes. My only beef about the Ultima 80ED is that there is NO eyepiece cover. Come on Celestron, I think you've been at this optics game long enough to know to include a 2-cent piece of plastic on a scope that lists for $870.

 "Reasonable quality, portable" 2010-02-24
By Pikkidok
I wanted something portable that I can easily set up and bring about. I considered the Ultima 80, the Mak C65 and Mak C90. I want to use it to look at both terrestial things and occasionally point up to the moon or planets.

The Mak C90 is obviously very good and is a respectable astronomical device. But it looks delicate and vulnerable with its big lens and mirror. It felt like you could easily drop it when you set it up on a tripod.

The Mak C65 is cute but the lens quality was poor. More of a toy then anything.

The Ultima 80 is quite good in terms of lens quality. But it is long and heavy.

So I bought Ultima 65. My main complain is the price. I bought it through a local dealer which didnt give a very good price. I do not have any options unless I purchase through the internet. I do not live in North America which then makes shipping costly.

The lens quality was better than expected. Very crisp views at the 18X. Acceptable views at 55X.

Much more useful as a daytime scope. I suspect it has got to do with the exit pupil which makes it harder to see at night when our pupils are more dilated. I tried to look at Saturn (under windy conditions) under max magnification. You can make out that it is a tiny disk and maybe with some imagination, the ring.

I notice that the eye piece lens is not very well machined...as you can see tiny spots (cracks?) on the periphery. Hardly noticeable and does not affect the viewing but you probably wont get this in something more expensive.

Another thing I do not like about this scope is that the eye piece does not have a cover, so you have to remove it and put it back into its container. This creates an extra hassle when setting up. A small scope like this should be ready for use without any setting up. I improvise a dust cap over the eye piece and left the eye piece permanently on the scope.

Overall, a decent buy if you can get a good price. I would have given a 4 star if I got it cheaper!

"Clear image but a bit stron for what I got it for" 2009-03-20
By Gary Gadeken
I bought this spotting scope for 10 Meter target rifle shooting. It has a very nice clear image and is a very nice scope. Unfortunately it is a little too strong and I cannot see the entire target when it is set up on the firing line without moving it. It is worse when I have two targets side-by-side.

 "An wonderful scope" 2010-01-14
By BB (Texas)
This scope has really impressed me. It's a step up from the Wal-Mart optics that I had. Not a high end $4,000 scope but this does what I need. Stands out at my range and gets the "WOW" effect. Not a scope I would take back packing though, rather heavy and bulky.

"Best bang for the buck" 2009-12-10
By Philip Washington (Abilene, Texas USA)
I use this as a spotting scope for target shooting. So far everything I've looked at and worked with gets dicey at about 500 yds. It just depends on the conditions. But a rule of thumb is if the sun is out and you aren't being barraged with thermals you should be able to see at minimal 500 yds. So far I have not been disappointed in what I got for the price. When there are no thermals and good light, I can see very well at 500yds.

I also like it's field of view. I was actually watching 4 targets the last time out without moving the scope. These are 12" x 12 " targets.

I have a Schmidt and Bender 56mm scope and it's brightness and optics are actually better, but we are comparing a $2000 + set of optics to a < $500 set of optics. I also have a NightForce 56mm scope and I would compare it's brightness as a little better.

I have had quite a number of people use my scope for spotting and they are really amazed at it's performance vs cost. So I would say that if these guys would put in a MOA or mildot reticle, they could sell quite a few more to people who are in the sport of long distance shooting.

At 600 yds on a good day like the last, I think this would have been fine. But no matter what scope you get, there are going to be some days you just have to walk up.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars is that it doesn't have a hash reticle option, and the optics are really not the best. But I think price vs performance this is a keeper. So far I haven't run into anyone who could see something I couldn't.
