 "First Impressions" 2009-10-21
By Chase Allan Mumford (Albany, Georgia)
This is the first real pair of binoculars I have ever purchased. As soon as I took them out of the box I was impressed by the clarity. They are very easy to focus with the single knob in the center of the sight lenses. The rubberized coating makes them highly tactile. I am planning on using them for hunting so I was interested in finding a pair that were water and fog proof. The compact size was also a major buying point. I could easily read the liscense plate on a neighbors car from over 150 yrds. May update after more field use but so far ......great buy!!!

"does not hold focus while zooming" 2009-11-19
By Karmic Refugee (Warren, PA United States)
These binoculars seemed like a great idea that was well designed, but upon opening the box today, I noticed there was a visible flaw in the objective lens, prompting its quick return to seller. It was brand new and should not, at ~$140, come with defects. The seller ([...[) was very quick at getting the unit returned at no cost to me. Very reasonable, no hassle.

While on the phone setting up the return, I decided to dump this design. Reason: the Eagleview was unable to hold its focus while zooming, a fatal flaw in my book. Instead I reordered the Nikon Travelite V, 8-24/25, which was barely different in price. I have an old pair of the Travelite IIIs which still works great, and I am hoping the zoom engineering on the TL-V is better than on their Eagleviews.

Might have given it three stars if it wasn't for the flaw in the lens, which colored my expectation of the overall quality of all others in this line.

 "Great Binoculars" 2009-03-11
By Jerry Marshall (michigan)
These are great binoculars. After owning several other zoom types, I find these to be very good for sports and other outdoor activities. There is a loss of light in the lens when you extend the power, but when you want a small compact pair to use as a zoom-you give up something.

"Good binoculars for viewing theater events" 2009-02-25
By Dan (California)
Light weight, clear image, easy to focus. Works well in a theater or outdoors when hiking. Gets the most details and best image at 8x, works well up to 12x, then the image loses details and gets more difficult to keep stable. Still, it's nice to have the capability to shift to the higher range if and when wanted.

"Take the shake out Buck Fever" 2009-11-27
By The Great Bawana (midwest)
Let's face it, no matter how many big game animals you see your heart starts thumping and your breathing is labored. That's usually when you need to decide whether it's time to shoot or pass. Another common scenario is glassing out west and trying to decide if you should make a 1/2 mile stalk while straing to get a good view of the rack.

I assure you these things work. I have had mine for 4 or five years. I have two pairs of rechargable batteries. I don't think I have ever had to change fully charged batteries in the same day.

Where they are noticably lacking is low light at the very beginning and end of the day. My Nikon Monarchs are much better for those 10-15 minutes and that can be a big deal. I wish they had 10 x 40's. They already weigh more than regular bino's so adding a few ounces for improved low-light viewing would make them 5 star.

"Good performance but unable to handle marine environment" 2009-11-13
By Williejoe (Philadephia, PA)
I knew these were not waterproof, but they don't seem to have any water resistance at all. Used them for 2 summers on the boat and the IS system stopped working. They didn't get dunked in water and the optics are fine; just being the salt air apparently was bad enough. And the estimated repair cost (out of warranty) is out of line with their cost.

So will try anther brand since their waterproof version is so much more expensive.

 "Bird watching heaven" 2009-11-08
By C. Doeble
I purchased Canon 10x30 Image Stabilization Binoculars w/Case, Neck Strap & Batteries binoculars for my wife. She has had many pairs of binoculars and now we are in the golden ages of our lives, she found the binoculars she had to be to heavy for walking around in the woods, not really clear and with slight tremors in her hands focusing was becoming an issue. The Canon 10x30 Image Stabilization Binoculars w/Case, Neck Strap & Batteries fit the bill for the perfect binoculars for her to bird watch with. Right after we got the binoculars we went into the woods for several hours and she was thrilled.

"Excellent for Bird Watching on a Hike" 2009-09-13
By Giordano Bruno (Wherever I am, I am.)
Yes, they're a little costly, and they aren't so light that you'll forget you've got them hanging from your neck. Also, they won't take abuse; they really resent being dropped, they are afraid of the water, and they don't respond well to being spanked or shaken.

So why might you need them?

1. The optics are extremely good; stick to canon and Nikon, and you'll be okay.

2. The Image Stabilization is effective; it gives you enough of an edge to find feather details etc. that you'd miss without IS. If you have a hard time holding binoculars steady enough, this edge will be worth double.

3. The Canon guarantee is long-lasting and, in my experience, Canon service is prompt and thorough. I do note that a couple of one-star reviewers would beg to differ.

These are probably the cheapest IS binoculars that are worth considering. Otherwise, choose your binos by some other criterion, but stay away from Bushnell and don't expect great optics from ultra-cheapos.

These opera glasses arrive in a very ugly retail box, but inside are these beautful opera glasses. They are not only beautiful, but have great magnification an clarity. The neckchain is high quality and a tremendous bonus. I was thrilled with this purchase, especially for the price.

Some reviewers mentioned not being able to adjust the glasses to their narrow set eyes, but my eyes are narrow set and I had no problem.

Would highly recommend these opera glasses to any woman (way too fru-fru for a guy)

These opera glasses look beautiful and seem to be a great value (for example, a pair that looks the same that was for sale at the opera house cost ~$90!) Unfortunately, I have a small face and the two eyepieces do not get close enough together for me. They are adjustable, just not enough.

 " Barska Blueline 3x25 Opera Glass w/ Necklace " 2007-10-19
By Robert A. Burnside, Jr. (Beckley WV)
The glasses have only one adjustment in the center for both eyes, and do not have the individual eye adjustment that is usually provided for one eye so that a sharper focus can be achieved when the center adjustment is employed. I would recommend purchasing a step higher for that purpose because I could not get a good focus with just a center adjustment.

The instructions that were in the box were for another product.

The reason I selected these glasses was because they were the only ones that Amazon offered overnight shipment for, and I had waited until a few days before the performance to buy them. That was my fault for procrastinating. I would have spent a few more dollars for a better pair if I had allowed myself more time.

I would not recommend buying these because of the difficuly focusing them.

 "Takes a steady hand" 2008-02-23
By Aged Cheddar (Wisconsin USA)
This scope is what it is, a small, graduated monocular. You must hold it steady to use it effectively. It should be used to augment your distance estimates, in addition to course markers, etc. You don't get sophistication at this price. For beginning golfers, it's better than a wag!

 "Unpractical, unusuable" 2008-01-16
By Eminence Grise (Niceville, FL USA)
This item looks good on paper but in practice is quite unusable. In order to have a workable yardage reading from which to select a club, it is necessary to hold the scope absolutely rock solid while sighting on the green pin. This is an impossible task. While the manufacturer acknowledges that the reading is approximate, "approximate" takes on whole new meaning with this scope. Readings are easily + or - 20 yards. Compared with this size of an error, my eyeball does equally as good a job.

I have purchased three of these binoculars, all three are of excellent generally, but all have two big weaknesses:

1: The "for eyeglass wear" extensions threads do not fit snugly when extended, they creep backwards causing readjustment inconvenience.

2: The focus adjustment mechanism on the right hand side tube is very loose, will not stay in place causing frequent readjustment.

I like these binoculars very much but the above two shortcoming are big distractions.

 "Great for Golf!" 2009-12-30
By David Daily (Austin, TX)
If you're purchasing this for golf, it's great. However, there's a trick! You have to practice your aim. Don't go out on the course the first time, aim at a few flags from 250 yards and expect to get an accurate reading on the first shot.

You will get better, I almost never miss now. It's much better than GPS because it's more accurate and you can get distances of objects on the course that wouldn't be marked on the GPS - like trees. If you still have trouble aiming, just find a bigger target - Aim at a person on the green.

Great tool, the best option out there and PGA approved!

 "Bad choice for Golf" 2009-09-24

 "Not For Golf" 2009-09-11

"Testing two nice Nikon laser range finders, Others to consider" 2009-08-12
By Emolis (USA)
I have compared the Nikon ProStaff Laser Rangefinder 550 to a Nikon Prostaff 440 and a Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport 450, using all three on the same targets.

Note: I have NOT tried these units on a golf course. All three units are made in China.

The Nikon 550 is a very capable laser range finder, and is very similar in ability to the Nikon 440.

The main differences between the two are the slightly greater range of the 550 model.

Despite the understatement of the advertising, I have ranged out to 706 yards with the Nikon 550, and 545 yards with the Nikon 440.

Dark trees can be ranged up to about 400 yards with the Nikon 550, and 330 yards with the Nikon 440. Deer can be ranged to 300 yards reliably with both. The 550 model has a magnification of 6X and the 440 unit is 8X and I greatly prefer the 8X view of the Nikon 440.

Both have a diopter adjustment which is adequate for my eyeglass correction of +5 diopters with and without my glasses.

I also find the long rubber eyepiece of the 550 unit difficult to use if I change to and from eyeglasses, as I do not like to keep folding the rubber down, and I know from experience that you can fold these type of eyepieces only so many times before the rubber (or vinyl) cracks.

Ranging Performance is:

Dark trees: Nikon 550 400 yards, Nikon 440 330 yards

Telephone poles: Nikon 550 430 yards, Nikon 440 360 yards

Deer: unobstructed medium deer, both 300 yards

Dark shrubs: Nikon 550: 400 yards, Nikon 440 350 yards

Light colored buildings: Nikon 550 535 yards, Nikon 440 453 yards

Very reflective targets, eg trucks, Nikon 550 706 yards, Nikon 440 535 yards

They both acquire targets well and range accurately when compared to other units.

I am biased to wards the Nikon 440 unit, because:

1. it is smaller and handier

2. It has 8X magnification which I really like and use (and need)

2. It is adequate for anything out to 300 yards and often 400 yards

3 It costs about 60 dollars less than the Nikon 550

5. The battery compartment screws down 3 turns and seems better sealed than the 1/4 turn compartment of the Nikon 550

6. The optics are virtually the same on both except for magnification. Both are clear and bright.

7. Generally, the range is perhaps 15 or 20 percent more for the Nikon 550 unit due to the higher laser power (15 watts pulse vs the 8.5 watts pulse of the 440 unit).

Other notes;

The Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport 450 is not anywhere in the same league as the other two, despite the price (I paid 179). The Bushnell is simple to use but will not read beyond 230 yards on any but the most reflective target, despite what the advertising says. The longest range I could measure with it was 330 yards and that on a reflective sign. This unit is supposed to range up to 800 yards (732 meters)! It will range a tree up to 200 yards as claimed, but the best it will do on medium deer is 140 yards. It is a 4 power monocular, and will range down to 6 yards, the others will range as close as 11 yards (10M). This Bushnell is by far the lowest quality of any unit I have seen. Bushnell claims water resistance, but there are various entry points for water, and if the unsealed battery compartment is opened, green circuit board is visible. If the rubber eyepiece protector is removed (all too easily) the optics are exposed and vulnerable. There is absolutely nothing to protect the electronics and optics from water and moisture. That along with very poor ranging capabilities make this Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport 450 nothing more than a child's toy, albeit an expensive one.

I had a little more expectation for this pair of $10 binoculars because of generally good reviews. But in reality, the optics is not good. There is strong chromatic aberration that affects its image quality. The neck strap is a toy-like nylon string. Is it worth $10? probably. I will use it for disposable purposes. Is it a real bargain? Probably not.

I have the big expensive ones that have lens caps and are huge. I was looking for a small unit to take on a cruise. These fit the bill perfectly. They fold down and come in a nice black case and even have a lens cloth with them.

Lifetime warranty is a nice plus also.

They are not black as shown but camo. Mine are basically just green, like olive green. Makes no differnce to me, the images are clear, they are small and if they fall overboard I'm not going to cry about it. Will be more upset as to litter.

Great for the price. One note they do have a strong chemical odor when you first open them. I just put them in another room and let them air out for a few days and they are fine now.
