Nikon optics clarity lives up to all my expectations. It's still a 3x9x40 and the magnification isn't any more than any other cheaper model scope of the same size, but the clarity is awesome. Low light transmission is everything it's touted to be. I purposely stayed past dusk, much longer than I normally would just to see how long I could still see through this scope, and it did not disappoint. When it was dark enough that I could barely see to walk back out, I could still see through this scope, and that is exactly what I was after. If you can't afford a larger model, then get the 3x9x40 you won't be disappointed with it, but if you can spare the extra cash, I would go for the 50mm objective lens and a bit more power.

I believe this is a now discontinued item, but in the event that someone is considering it, I would say that my experience is very good. This is the first laser rangefinder I've used, and there are many that maybe better, more expensive and/or easier to use, but this one works for me. I recommend it.

This is a really simple range finder to use. Just point, push power on button and then push again to get the range. It reads in 1/2 yard/meter increments. I also really like its small size. My only nit is that it feels boxy in my hand. But that's a really small nit. I'm also happy that it's rated over 6000 ranges on one CR2 battery. I don't think I'll have to worry about the battery for a while.



The closest I could get it to range is 11 yards. The farthest away I got a reading (so far) is 482 yards on a tree in very dim light. I'm very confident it will fill my needs for bow and rifle hunting.

I have compared the Nikon ProStaff Laser Rangefinder 440 to a Nikon Prostaff 550 and a Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport 450, using all three on the same targets.

Note: I have NOT tried these units on a golf course. All three units are made in China.



The Nikon 550 is a very capable laser range finder, and is very similar in ability to the Nikon 440.

The main differences between the two are the slightly greater range of the 550 model.

Despite the understatement of the advertising, I have ranged out to 706 yards with the Nikon 550, and 545 yards with the Nikon 440.

Dark trees can be ranged up to about 400 yards with the Nikon 550, and 330 yards with the Nikon 440. Deer can be ranged to 300 yards reliably with both. The 550 model has a magnification of 6X and the 440 unit is 8X and I greatly prefer the 8X view of the Nikon 440.

Both have a diopter adjustment which is adequate for my eyeglass correction of +5 diopters with and without my glasses.

I also find the long rubber eyepiece of the 550 unit difficult to use if I change to and from eyeglasses, as I do not like to keep folding the rubber down, and I know from experience that you can fold these type of eyepieces only so many times before the rubber (or vinyl) cracks.



Ranging Performance is:

Dark trees: Nikon 550 400 yards, Nikon 440 330 yards

Telephone poles: Nikon 550 430 yards, Nikon 440 360 yards

Deer: unobstructed medium deer, both 300 yards

Dark shrubs: Nikon 550: 400 yards, Nikon 440 350 yards

Light colored buildings: Nikon 550 535 yards, Nikon 440 453 yards

Very reflective targets: trucks, Nikon 550 706 yards, Nikon 440 535 yards



They both acquire targets well and range accurately when compared to other units.



I am biased toward the Nikon 440 unit, because:



1. it is smaller and handier

2. It has 8X magnification which I really like and use (and need)

2. It is adequate for anything out to 300 yards and often 400 yards

3 It costs about 60 dollars less than the Nikon 550

5. The battery compartment screws down 3 turns and seems better sealed than the 1/4 turn compartment of the Nikon 550

6. The optics are virtually the same on both except for magnification. Both are clear and bright.

7. Generally, the range is perhaps 15 or 20 percent more for the Nikon 550 unit due to the higher laser power (15 watts pulse vs the 8.5 watts pulse of the 440 unit).



Other Notes;

The Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport 450 is not anywhere in the same league as the other two, despite the price (I paid 179). The Bushnell will not read beyond 230 yards on any but the most reflective target, despite what the advertising says. The longest range I could measure with it was 330 yards and that on a reflective sign. This unit is supposed to range up to 800 yards (732 meters)! It will range a tree up to 200 yards as claimed, but the best it will do on medium deer is 140 yards. It is a 4 power monocular, and will range down to 6 yards, the others will range as close as 11 yards (M). This Bushnell is by far the lowest quality of any unit I have seen. Bushnell claims water resistance, but there are various entry points for water, and if the unsealed battery compartment is opened, green circuit board is visible. If the rubber eyepiece protector is removed (all too easily) the optics are exposed and vulnerable. There is absolutely nothing to protect the electronics and optics from water and moisture. That along with very poor ranging capabilities make this Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport 450 nothing more than a child's toy, albeit an expensive one.

I bought the Nikon 440 Rangefinder for golf - even though it's designed for hunters. It does a great job. You don't even need a particularly steady hand with it as you can press, and hold, the range button down and make slow sweeps across the area you are looking at and the range will change with what the crosshairs are zeroed in on. If there's enough of a breeze to get the flag to fly a bit, it'll even snag a reading on that - something I didn't have particularly high hopes for but was pleasantly surprised. Edges of sand traps, trees, treelines, shrubs, bushes, creek and pond edges - all are no-brainers to spot-in with this Nikon. It makes a huge difference in confidence KNOWING a full driver can't reach the water or a full 7-iron can't put you in the sandtrap behind the green. The optics are excellent - typical Nikon quality. It would be a great rangefinder even at a higher price, but with the relatively low price it is - it's a bargain.

This was on Dick's golf website. It's fine for large objects, but even at 50 feet it is extremely difficult to get a reading on a pin or flag. Too bad we didn't read the reviews first.



And as it was a Christmas gift in a northern climate, we didn't have a chance to test it until we went to Florida in late January when we immediately realized it would not work for golf. By then it was beyond Dick's 30-day return period and, even though we explained the delay in our using it, they would not take it back for an exchange on another brand or model.

After looking and buying a couple of spotting scopes, I found this one to met my needs. I bought much higher priced spotting scopes and this Nikon was a pleasant surprise based on its performance. I compared three different manufactures with varying prices from $300-$1000 at the rifle range. At 100 yards, all were acceptable. At 300 yards, the differences were very apparent. The performance of the Nikon was very impressive compared to the expensive spotting scope. I am sold on the Nikon and saved about $500. I can now buy some other hunting toys that I probably don't need, but want.

 "Great scope esp for the price" 2010-01-01

The gun dept guy at Gander Mountain recommended this scope, saying it was a good scope for the "value end" of their line; he also said he uses the Prostaff in 3-9x50. Since it was at the upper end of what I could justify spending, I looked it up on Amazon -- low and behold, it was about $30 less for the black Prostaff on Amazon than the $169.99 at Gander, plus Gander was totally out of stock on all Prostaff scopes; not sure what they charge for the silver Prostaff, but I seem to recall it was more than the black.



Anyways, I ordered from Amazon, had the scope 23 hours later. Took the scope plus some Leupold rings and base back to Gander, where they mounted and boresighted it on my new Marlin 308 MXLR lever action. This gun has true 308 ballistics, capable of reaching out several hundred yards. I can't say enough good about the guys at Gander Mountain, by the way, they did a great job in every respect, including mounting and boresighting.



To dial in the scope, I shot one round at 25 yards and basically nailed the bullseye. SWEET! Lacking time and not wanting to blow through a whole box of 308 Express rounds at $1.25 each, I then went directly to the 100 yard target. My group was 1" low and 1.5" left. I adjusted for height and windage twice more, and one shot of my last very tight group nailed the bullseye again. SUPER SWEET!



The next morning it was barely light enough to see plus very foggy. I saw something that I thought might be a deer a bit over 150 yards away. Put the scope (Prostaff) on it, and yup, it was a buck, mostly facing straight at me presenting a minimal target. The optics on this thing are very, very clear. A lesser scope would definitely have hampered my ability to see the animal at all. I squeezed off a shot, and saw it fall over. When I checked the shot, I found the hole exactly where I aimed.



Good in low light, clear optics, nice reticle, etc. etc. Another guy had the same scope in black on a new .444 he'd won in a raffle, he also liked the clarity. I heartily recommend this scope.

A very nice, very bright and accurate scope for the money. In fact the best scope on todays market for the money. A much better scope than the low end Leupolds. It would be nice if it had a little more eye relief, but 3.6 inches is fine on my Rem Mtn Rifle LA. Although it is not US made it is not Chinese made. Still has excellent clarity in low light.

These binoculars are very friendly to hold, both in your hand and to your eye. The sharpness and contrast are excellent with the exception when looking toward a bright light source. This is when flare kicks in and contrast suffers. These binos are prone to flare and that is about my only criticism of them.



The rubberized surface is ideal. It lends a grabby texture that's easy to grip but doesn't have that gummy quality that makes some attract lint and dirt. The eye cup design is great and has a relatively wide ring diameter and a fairly broad surface that is very comfortable. I mention this as most minis have an eyecup design that is too small and fits too deeply into one's eye socket causing discomfort. These feel like mid size binos in use.



The focus knob has a very nice feel to it. Very smooth with no play. The large diameter focus knob is like what you'd find on a full-sized bino and is better than most minis.

The simple case it comes with is quite useful and has a belt loop. Being as light as they are they carry on a belt without issue. The rain guard (ocular cap) works OK, though not as snug as I'd like.



I like the reverse porro prism design of these (and other makers) better than the two parallel tube (roof prism) design for a mini binocular as they feel more substantive and are easier to hold steady.



Other binoculars I currently own: Leica 8x32 BNs, Leica 10x42 BAs. In the past I have owned Leica, Minolta, and Celestron minis as well.



Keeping in mind they are an inexpensive compact, these are an overall excellent binocular and a super value IMO.

I bought this for my kid, we started doing birdwatching trips regularly this year. It folds nicely for the right distance between the eyes and stays there. The focus control is easy to operate even for small hands. The twist out eyepiece cups are great for using over eyeglasses. This part actually works!

Finally, the optics are superb! Everything about this pair of binoculars is solid and smooth. Bit higher on the price range, but worth every penny. Should last for a lifetime.
