 "Awesome Wildlife Binocs" 2010-05-16
By A. Brown (California)
As a Wildlife Biologist I depend on my field gear to either gather important data or to make it easier to get to where I am collecting the data so you can imagine how important equipment can be. For this most recent field season I purchased 4 different models (after trying several others in store) of binoculars for my field team in order conduct surveys for endangered species. Of the 4 models the Olympus Trooper 7X35 DPS1m Binoculars proved superior. They have wonderful clarity and focus easily. We purchased separate shoulder straps so I cannot comment on the ones included in the package. I will be purchasing several more of this model for this field season and future seasons.

"I'm glad to have my Olympus Binocs." 2009-07-01
By Walter L. Johnson
In 2001 I bought virtually identical Olympus Binoculars and they were perfect for me. A couple of months ago I dropped them on my garage floor and that knocked them out of allignment.

Olympus offered to replace them at no charge if I would send them in with my original receipt. Unfortunately, I no longer had the receipt, so I replaced them with this purchase.

So far the new set is working well for me.

By J. H. Johnson (Flemingsburg, KY)
I think these binoculars are very clear for the price. I would buy another pair. In this price range I have not found a better pair.

The only thing I would note is that they are not listed as fog proof or

water proof. This may be an issue if you are a hunter.

 "Lightweight, general purpose 7x35" 2005-08-02
By Hiker Frank (Arizona)
I was looking for a general purpose 7x35 binocular for camping and birdwatching. The Olympus DPS 1 was one of the lighter offerings in that power, important for me in carrying them on a hike. I like the "grippy" texture of the binoculars. The case is lightweight and has a decent strap on it. One small gripe are the four lens caps, somewhat loose fitting, however they really are not needed when carrying the binoculars in the case, I just leave them at home. Great quality for a reasonable price.

 "Excellent quality item" 2009-07-14
By M. Landis (PA)
I bought these for my boyfriend as a gift and he loves them. We wanted a pair so that we could sit and watch the boats on the lake near our apartment, and these fit the bill. He likes the zip view which he says works really well for watching the birds fly across the water. I read up on binocs before I bought these, and I don't think you can beat the quality or price. Very well made and I highly recommend them. You won't be disappointed with this purchase!

By Big Guy (Northern California)
In spite of the tendency to promote high powered binoculars, the 7X35 wide angle remains the handiest size. Reasonably light and compact, and fine for daytime use.

I'm not a binocular connoisseur, but the Tasco binoculars defined the detail on quail in my yard just fine. I felt no eyestrain while using the pair. The focus is very quick and easy, a great improvement over the old kind, where you turn and turn a wheel.

 "Bright and clear." 2009-08-22

The brightest and clearest I have seen. I tried several before I purchased these and I believe that, for the price, these are the best. I definitely would purchase the same again.

The only drawback is the eyecup covers--not very handy and could be better.

"Useless for people with smaller faces" 2008-11-02
By birdbrain (Massachusetts, USA)
I was excited to try these for bird watching, and got exemplary customer service and shipping from Amazon affiliated merchant.

Unfortunately neither my wife nor I (both normal-sized people) was unable to test them effectively because the eyepieces do not adjust close enough together to make a nice "circle"; instead we got double circles and double vision. The adjustment goes from 56-74mm which is apparently the range of average adult male faces. Well, if Nikon is listening, I checked all their models and none of them go below 56mm that I could find. That cuts out a big portion of the population

After this experience I realized that finding "interpupillary distance range" specifications is very difficult, even with all the optics websites out there. I ended up buying Leupold Yosemite 8x30's, which adjust from 50-70mm and are also a standard porro-prism design.

I understand that all binoc's involve compromises, and I'm no engineer, but it seems to me it would be a small design change to the hinge to make these fit many more people.

"Startlingly clear images and the widest field of view I've seen" 2008-10-25
By Wings42 (San Diego, CA United States)
I've had my pair for about 3 years now and use them a lot for birding, the opera, and hiking. We keep them on the kitchen table to look at birds at our feeders, so they get almost daily use. The optics amaze me, and the binoculars have been perfectly dependable and easy to use. The very large eye relief makes them perfect for us, as we both wear glasses. I also like the adjustable eye cups. Rubber eye cups that curl back for use with glasses only last a year or two before cracking. These threaded eye cups should last indefinitely.

They're a bit heavy, so we bought a well padded camera strap to replace the thinner strap that came with the binocular. The case that comes with the binoculars works well, and has cutouts for straps.

We like this binocular so much that we are soon going to order another one so we both have one when hiking. I'm not tempted to get the 8x40 because the optics are so clear and bright that we can see birds much better with these than our previous, cheaper 8x binoculars. Also, a wide field of view is critical at the opera. The 8x40 is a little heavier, with a little narrower field of view than the 7x35.

Regarding the objective lens cover, I cut three slits into the sides of each cup so they slip on easily. Also, I've attached all the lens covers to the binocular with woven fishing line so they're never lost. They hang down about 8 inches when the binoculars are in use.

 "Already broken" 2008-08-02
By Ken Shannon
Bought this item because it was highly rated in Consumersearch. Used the binoculars less than 10 times and was removing the eyepiece cap and the right eyecup came off (this happened yesterday). Tried to reattach it but could not. These binoculars reportedly have a good warranty, so am hoping that when I contact Nikon I will be able upgrade this review. Prior to the eyecup problem, I was satisfied with the product.

I've had many pairs of binoculars over many years, some pretty good, some pretty bad, but these Nikons were a surprise the first time I put them up for a view. They are, I think, the best you are going to do in the price range, and maybe better than you will do in the next range up.

"Good deal for the price." 2010-01-21
By R. E. Crisp (Texas)
This is my second pair in the last year, one for my wife, and then me, my old ones are the same style and brand, but just a lot older, so I wanted to replace them.

What can I say except, for the price, you get a pretty good pair of binoculars, and these, they're rubber-coated, so it makes them all the more nicer.

I use these to help me spot what I will photograph next, spotting a bird that I am unsure of, that kind'a thing.

This doesn't take the place of a spotting scope, but it's perfect from what I need them for, and it's a lot more easier to carry than a scope would be.

The optics are bright and clear, and at this magnification they don't shake like the higher powered ones do, not knocking those, but that's a whole 'nother animal, at least for me.

I love these things, I'd highly recommends them to anyone that doesn't need a high dollar pair, and really, these should be double what they cost, they're that good.

Customer Buzz
"Pretty good for their price" 2009-08-11
By B. Roy (Sunnyvale, CA, USA)
There is really no need to get binoculars that cost 5 times (or more) for casual use. These work just fine and I've owned one for a couple of years. If you get any higher magnification than 10X, they are difficult to handhold - so 7X is really the sweet spot as far as magnification goes. The other number refers to the exit aperture (bigger the number - more light gets into the binocular). These also work quite well in darker situations - letting in plenty of light and giving you a bright image. I've noted small differences when compared with an Olympus that cost about 8 times more - but really, for their price, these can't be beat..

The lenses are also coated and combined with a prism system (instead of mirrors), makes for sharper images.

Only con is that this type of binocular is not pocket sized. However, its pretty comfortable to carry on your neck (neckstrap)

For the reviewer who claimed that these were worse than toy plastic binoculars - well - just one word comes to my mind "clueless". They either had sphagetti on their lenses or were looking at birds through the wrong end of the binocular...

 "Fast Focus" 2006-07-30

 "Excellent midgrade binoculars" 2001-09-24
By Scott Florack (Eastern PA)
While comparing items in the store where I eventually purchased these binoculars, I noticed two things that immediately set these pair from the rest. The "InstaFocus" one-finger focus was excellent and dead on. Also the ability to track moving objects far exceeded a pair of Tasco's I demoed. The Falcons seem to stay in focus, without needing adjustment, for considerably varying distances.

I used the binoculars at a racetrack and professional football game (not having the BEST seats) and could easily make out names, etc. Great clarity, decent power, excellent focus make these a great purchase.

 "Very Disappointing!" 2000-06-22

In my experience, Bausch and Lomb's products, unfortunately, are very poorly made.. My 7-year-old cousin and I were unable to see the birds on our nature trip with these binoculars. We ended up having to pick up a pair of plastic binoculars at a nearby toystore (which worked much better!)

are easy to focus. My wife loves them.

 "Great for birds" 2009-06-01
By D. Borrego (Michigan)
I bought these binoculars for bird watching and for that purpose they work great. I have a pair of 10x50 and although I really like them I wanted something smaller and steadier. I will still use my 10x50's but more for raptors in flight or bird watching in the woods, these ones are a lot more confortable when watching birds at a medium range, casual bird watching around the house or simply trying to follow a bird to its nest (due to the large field of view).

There is some distortion around the outer edges but it isn't bad, I actually only noticed it because I was deliberately looking for it. The images are sharp and I am surprised at how bright the images are considering the price and size of the lenses. Some bird watching sites would have you believe that you have to spend an arm and a leg on a pair of binoculars in order to bird watch properly, that is not the case. This pair will show all the detail on birds (even the tiny ones).

Customer Buzz
"Unbelievable quality for this price range." 2009-01-23
By Ann Dromeda (Beach Lake, PA)
As an amateur astronomer, I am always on the lookout for good binoculars, and have had experience with quite a few - even a few very highly rated high-end types. I saw the Nikons in a sporting goods store about 6 months ago, and was impressed at the clarity and depth of field apparent even within the store. After asking permission to take them outside, observations confirmed my initial impressions. They are nearly as bright (and clearer, better color rendition) than a "standard" brand 7x50 - perhaps because of excellent multi-coatings. The 9+ degree FOV makes them ideal for digging out fainter constellations and asterisms. Stars remained point-like nearly to the edge of the field. True, I couldn't see too many Messier# galaxies, but you can't see many with ANY 7x bino, most requiring at least a decent 10x50. The compact size also makes these useful for daytime applications, such as birdwatching and other nature related activities, or watching athletic events.

This was my first experience with Nikon binoculars, and based on this purchase I soon bought the Nikon 10x50s as well. Although I thought I got an incredibly good buy at the time, I have since learned I could have saved 15% by buying on-line - no matter, they are still "keepers" with which I will never part. An incredible value. For the casual user, they may be all the binocular you will ever need.

"Nice binoculars, but don't lose the lens cap!" 2008-10-13
By A Reader (Seattle)
We bought these binoculars for a trip to Alaska. They are fairly compact and lightweight, which made them perfect for viewing wildlife and scenery while backpacking. My only complaint is that we lost one of the objective lens caps, and it has been pretty much impossible to replace it. Nikon says that part has been backordered for 7 months, and I can't find any dealers who sell it. It seems crazy, especially after reading the other reviewer's comment about how easy it is to lose the cap.... we must not be the only ones with this problem.

"Nikon wide-angle 7x35 action binocs very good deal" 2008-09-08
By Ralph Chang (Arlington, MA)
The optics are excellent. I found viewing excellent, ranging from viewing stars and Jupiter and the Moon to birds in the woods. The only slightly irritating aspect is that, while there is a strap for the binocs, there is no strap for the case. I found myself accidentally dropping the case when taking the binoculars out, assuming the case was attached to something.

On the whole, this was an excellent purchase. RC
